Community Forklift, the DC metro area’s largest “thrift store” for home improvement, and its mission of recovering building materials that can be reused instead of thrown away has taken hold within the remodeling industry.
For years, the CARNEMARK team has been a huge fan. “We work with Community Forklift on nearly all of our projects,” says Jonas Carnemark, CR, CKD. “As a result of this partnership we are able to promote our green building practices, donate valuable materials for resale, and reduce our overall project costs, making it a win-win for everyone involved.”
Not only is CARNEMARK a Community Forklift enthusiast but they are also one of their top contributors of building materials and they have the donation process down. Because of this, Community Forklift asked CARNEMARK to be the featured company in a video tutorial showcasing each step of the donation process—from demolition and staging to jobsite pickup and even where the materials end-up.
“CARNEMARK is well advanced when it comes to recovery of materials from jobsites,” states Christine McCoy, Donations Director at Community Forklift. “We would love to visit CARNEMARK jobsites and create a video to instruct other builders on how to manage their sites for maximum reuse and recycling potential.”
Needless to say, the CARNEMARK team is honored to highlight their reuse and recycling best practices and is looking forward to showcasing the Community Forklift video. Stay tuned as the final video is coming soon.

On January 21, 2012, the National Associaton of Remodeling Industry hosted their Metro DC-area Contractor of the Year award ceremony. CARNEMARK entered three remodeling projects in this local CotY award competition and received highest recognition in all three categories (outlined below).
These same three projects also competed in the NARI 2012 National CotY award competition. Contractors from seven regions around the country vie for CotY awards on an annual basis. An impartial panel of judges, experts within the remodeling industry and associated fields, selected winners based on each entrant's binders, which include "before and after" photography and project descriptions. Judging focused on problem solving, functionality, aesthetics, craftsmanship, innovation, degree of difficulty and entry presentation.
In the National competition, judges first select Regional award winners and then those Regional winners go on to another round to compete to win at the National level in each remodeling category.
At the Regional Awards competition, CARNEMARK was named NARI 2012 Southeast Regional Contractor of the Year in two award categories: Entire House Over $1,000,000 and Residential Kitchen Over $120,000 (outlined below).

"The CotY Awards are the highest honor in the remodeling industry," said owner Jonas Carnemark, CR, CKD. "CARNEMARK is proud to be among the caliber of firms who are members of the NARI program. We are among the largest and most talented remodelers in the country."
All projects submitted for CotY awards were an improvement or an addition to an existing structure, with the exception of one category, "Residential Exterior Specialty." Otherwise, new construction projects were not eligible.
To be considered for a CotY Award, a company must be a NARI member in good standing. The entries of this year's competition totaled nearly $90 million worth of remodeling projects. NARI members represent an elite group of the approximately 800,000 companies and individuals in the U.S. identifying themselves as remodelers. For more information on NARI and its members, visit www.NARI.org.
